this episode is such an amazing breakdown of all the grossness inherent to the Nice Guy and friend zone concepts so popular with the media. and dang! when he publicly invites her to the big dance, and she wants to say no but she feels like she can’t because everyone else is watching and explicitly waiting for her to say yes (because they all think of gideon as this sweet darling who deserves whatever he wants) — what a great, precise criticism of everything that’s yeeky about public proposal
